The Nokia 6110 Navigator is a 3G HSDPA Symbian OS Series 60 slider phone with Route 66 GPS navigation. Other key features include a 2 MP camera, microSD card slot (a 512 MB card is in the box), FM visual radio, music player, real player and secondary camera.

Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman had a Nokia 6110 Navigator whilst biking to South Africa in their 'Long Way Down' series. Must be good.

Ewan McGregor, Charley Boorman

The 6110 Navigator key feature is (have you guessed yet?)... navigation. GPS navigation using Route 66 satellite navigation software. Uses assisted-GPS, UK and Ireland maps are preloaded and the voice-navigation (hellooo lady voice) is free - no need to pay a subscription fee (as you must do if using Nokia Maps). More on Route 66 and GPS in a moment.

Design

The 6110 Navigator is a bit of a chunkmeister - 2 cm thick. The 6110 has that cheap glossy black plastic casing - fingerprints are noticeable. Metal/metal coating can be found on the front (around the screen and navigation keys), and the camera lens cover.

Solidly built, slider is fine. Nokia should dump the cheap-looking black plastic. Reminds me of a plastic key fob I made in CDT, at Secondary school.

Left: MiniUSB connector, microSD slot, My Own key.

Right: Camera key, volume keys.

Front: Light sensor, camera, earpiece, display, nav keys, slide up (keypad).

Bottom: Back cover release - easy to remove cover, microphone, strap eyelet.

Top: Charger connector, Nokia 2.5 mm connector.

Back: Speakers, 2 MP camera lens with cover. The back looks like a smiley face with a Marge Simpson hairdo.

The GPS receiver is located upper right. When locking onto the satellites, go outside in a nice open space and hold the phone upright - imagine it's a lollipop (resist the temptation to lick).

Keypad: Fine. Decent-sized keys, easy-to-press, flat, a ridge separates each row.

Features

2 MP Camera

OK image quality in decent light. No autofocus, no flash and no macro. There is exposure compensation, 4x digital zoom, self-timer, white balance, sequence and other settings. Video capture (320 x 240) at 15 fps (could be 30 fps).

Nokia Web Browser

Nokia Mini Maps Web browser is fine. RSS feeds - essential if you have some sort of news addiction. 2.2-inch screen isn't great. Obvious. 3G and HSDPA offer fast download speeds (in 3G areas).

Message Reader

Press the 'My own' key on the left side and you'll access the message reader. The Message Reader is built-in to many Series 60 Symbian phones.

The Message Reader simply reads your text messages, MMS and email. We didn't test this out. Would hope you get dulcet lady tones. Honor Blackman voice sort of thing... "Andy, wanna go eat Sushi"... Purr....

Symbian OS, Series 60

Yes, the Nokia 6110 Navigator is smart. QuickOffice, install 3rd-party applications (not many do apparently).

Route 66 GPS Navigation

Route 66 navigation software is installed. UK and Ireland maps are loaded on onto the 512 MB card which comes in the box.

Route 66 satellite software - 2D maps, 3D maps, free text search (search for places, post codes, points of interest), save landmarks, integrates with your contacts list, waypoints, change colour scheme, customise the map... Press the dedicated 'navigator' key beneath the navigation pad.

A-GPS: Uses assisted-GPS - downloads data over the network to speed up getting a position fix. Hold your phone up towards the sky in an open space and wait. Can take 2 minutes.

Free Voice-guidance: GPS is free - it connects to the GPS satellites. Voice-guidance is included in the Route 66 software - no need to purchase a voice-navigation license, as you would have to do if using Nokia Maps.

Route 66 GPS

2.2-inch screen: You could use the 6110 in a car with voice-guidance turned on. The screen is too small to look at when driving, so use the voice.

Other Features

Music player, media player, push-to-talk, front-facing CIF camera, a couple of games, microSD card slot (up to 4 GB? - check that).

Summary

The 6110 is a good GPS phone. Route 66 software is fine, as is the music player and other media features. The 2 MP camera is OK, and there's no Wi-Fi.
