NFC - The Future is Here
NFC will be as ubiquitous as SMS. Say Nokia. Yep. Agreed. There's an environmental benefit - less plastic.
It's like a multi-purpose smartcard. Touch the phone to other phones (or swipe within a few cms - just like you would do with a travel card on London Underground), RFID tags and other NFC compatible devices. NFC is already in most new credit cards (so we've been told). Nokia have this to say:
Imagine your credit cards, loyalty cards, and travel card all in one place: inside your mobile phone. With near field communication (NFC) technology, your mobile phone is a multi-purpose smartcard, making shopping and travelling easy.
Use the phone to share content between phones, access services, make mobile payments, ticketing - just tap the phone. NFC has a small range - a few cms. Applications include:
- Mobile Ticketing
- Mobile Passport
- Smart Poster
- Bluetooth Pairing
- Mobile Payments
- Travel Cards
- ID
- Electronic Keys
Lots of potential uses. It's like something out of a sci-fi movie. Wave your phone in front of NFC devices to pay for tickets, make credit card payments, get information, share information with other phones, as keys to your house/car/bike. All exciting stuff.
Bluetooth or Wi-Fi is still used for the data transfer. NFC won't replace Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Work on NFC began way back in 2002.
Full review when the handset is released. Should be September 2008.
