SUMMARY:
Cheap 3G phone. It's a little chunky and less stylish-looking compared to the latest slider phones. Old phone.Nokia 6288 Review
The Nokia 6288 is a 3G slider phone. It's a decent enough phone, but some of its features and software don't match the new 3G slide phones - such as Nokia 6500 Slide. Lots of features, many are basic - but being an older phone (September 2006), you can buy a Nokia 6288 online at a good price.
Design
The Nokia 6288 is a fat phone. 2.1 cm depth. It has a glossy finish. Fingerprints are very noticeable on the phone's surface - a forever grubby sort of look.
Slider: Solid. Most slider phones we've tested are a little loose when in a closed position. The Nokia 6288 is no different. Fully open, the slider feels very solid.
The spring mechanism isn't as springy as other slide phones we've tested. Position the slider half-way up, and the front springs fully open.
Keypad: Slide the front up to reveal the keypad. A 0.5 mm gap separates each row and column of keys - this gives tactile feedback. The size of the keys are OK, the middle column of keys is wider than the other 2 key columns. No idea why.
The keypad is easy to use. If you have big thumbs, you might think the top row of keys doesn't have enough space above it. The numbers and letters on the keys have white lighting - 1, 2 and 3 seem to be brighter than the other keys.
Navigation keys: The front of the Nokia 6288 features the selection and end/call keys. Nice and big selection keys. We think the 4-way navigation pad could do with being a little thicker. Occasionally, my thumb would overlap one of the 4 surrounding keys and we would make an unwanted selection. This happened more often when we were navigating the menus quickly.
miniSD memory card: The Nokia 6288 comes with a 512 MB miniSD memory card. The memory card slot is easy enough to open.
Back cover: The back cover (battery cover) is a little stiff to open. The informative instruction manual tells you how to open the back cover. Apply pressure at the base of the back cover beneath 'Nokia' (we used 3 fingers) and then slide upwards.
Call Quality: Clear and loud. Use the volume button on the right side of the phone to adjust the volume.
Speaker quality: The speaker is on the left side of the phone beneath the PTT button. Speaker quality was fine. How loud? Ring tones seemed to be played louder than other files - .mp3, FM radio and others.
Headset / earphones: Plug the earphones into the connector at the base of the phone. They're fine - better than listening to music through the loudspeaker. You might want to get a pop-port 3.5 mm stereo jack adapter so you can plug in your own headset. You can buy one of these online or a high-street mobile shop for just a few pounds.
Features
Bluetooth: Worked fine. Supports headset and stereo (A2DP) Bluetooth profiles.
FM radio with Visual Radio: Simple. Does the job. Connect the headset to the connector to listen to FM radio. Visual radio is FM radio - with pictures. The interactive visual part is developed by the radio station. Quizzes, ask the presenter a question, feedback, competitions, polls... Visual Radio can show you what is playing right now, view artist pictures, biographies and more. There's no RDS.
Voice Features: The Nokia 6288 has voice dialling, voice recording and voice commands.
2 MP camera: Image quality is OK, providing you take the photo in good light, the shot has focus and you keep the phone still whilst taking the photo. There is no autofocus, image stabilizer or macro mode.
There is a camera light - you need to turn the flash or night mode on to use it. My Nokia 6288 has a bug - the flash would sometime not work. In camera mode, sliding the phone open or closed would activate the camera light (a very quick flash). Low-current LED flashes are not very bright.
Options include white balance, 8x digital zoom, self-timer, image sequence (takes 4 photos in quick succession) and effects. You can adjust the settings - image quality, image size, video clip quality, video clip length, camera sounds, default title and storage. Photos are saved in .jpg format.
The camera lens has a clear plastic cover - it's built into the back cover along with the mirror. The plastic cover is exposed to grubby fingers, dust and other grime. Plastic cover dirty = poorer quality photos.
Shutter release lag time: The time between pressing the camera button and the photo being taken. We timed it at approx. 0.9 seconds.
Video capture: Supports up to VGA (640 x 480) resolution. Videos are saved in the .3gp format.
Video sharing: During a phone call you can share your camera view with the call recipient - the other caller must have a compatible device and a SIP address. The Nokia 6288 also supports video messaging and video ringtones.
Video calling: There's a tiny front-facing VGA camera - use this for video calling.
Messaging: Audio, counter, flash, multimedia, SMS and email messages. The 6288 also supports instant messaging service - you need to subscribe to the service before you can use it. The 6288 has T9 predictive text - you can switch this on or off. Flash messages are instantly played upon receipt.
Web browsing: Pages can download reasonably fast - the Nokia 6288 supports 3G and EDGE. However, Web browsing is not very good. Browsing the Web on 2.2-inch screen is not enjoyable. The WAP browser offers stripped-down versions of Web pages - it's not a proper HTML Web browser offering pages as you'd see them on a large screen.
Entering URLs directly is slow. Predictive text works in text fields - eg: a Google search box, but it's still slow. Don't buy the Nokia 6288 if you want a semi-decent Web browsing experience. Buy a mobile phone with a larger screen - at least 3-inches is my preference.
The Web browser has no zoom or page navigation option. It lacks in features compared to the latest mobile Web browsers. There's also no Wi-Fi.
Instruction manual: Very good. Nice and thorough. 120 pages.
Switch the phone on without a SIM card: You don't need to insert a SIM card to use features which don't require a mobile network connection.
Battery life: Nokia quote 4.5 hours talk time, 3.5 hours on 3G networks.
Music player: Simple. Does the job. .mp3, .mp4 or .aac format sound files. You can play music via Bluetooth. Options include an equalizer, random play, repeat, track lists, send file options. We find file transfer between the phone and PC is easiest using Bluetooth. You can buy a Bluetooth dongle for under £15.
Media player: Simple. You can view videos full screen, send, set as a screen saver, incoming call video or contact video.
Summary
The Nokia 6288 is a decent enough phone. It does have a good number of features and it can be bought for a value price. It's a little chunky and less stylish-looking compared to the latest slider phones.
You might like to check out the latest 3G Nokia slider phones which have better features and more up-to-date software - for example, the Nokia 6500 Slide.
