Nokia N73 Review

The Nokia N73 is a quad-band 3G bar Symbian Series 60 smartphone. Key features include its 3.2 megapixel camera, bright 2.4-inch screen, miniSD card support, visual radio and Nokia push-to-talk.

The Nokia N73 was launched 3rd quarter 2006. It lacks some some of the features of newer Nokia smartphones - EG: Nokia N82 or the Nokia N95. There's no HSDPA (faster downloads) or Wi-Fi Internet access. The camera, whilst good, isn't as nifty as some of the later models either.

However, the Nokia N73 can be bought for a good price - under £140 on PAYG, so it's worth a look if you aren't bothered about getting the latest and greatest mobile phone.

Design

Solid design and not too heavy (116 g). Plastic. The N73 looks smart. Quick overview:

Front: VGA camera, earspeaker, ambient light sensor, navigation keys and the keypad. The keypad is a little cramped. The call keys are flush against the top of the numeric keypad and there's a gap between the soft keys and the bottom of the screen. A bit silly. Nokia should have moved the nav keys up a little to space the keys out more.

Back: 3.2 MP camera and LED light/flash. Slide open the big lens cover to activate the camera. Good protection for the lens.

Left: Infrared port.

Right: Volume rocker/zoom, gallery key (quick access to photos and videos), camera button.

Bottom: Loudspeaker, miniSD memory card slot (supports up to 2 GB), connector, charging port.

Top: Loudspeaker.

Features

3.2 MP Camera

Pretty good. 3.2 megapixels, Carl Zeiss lens. Autofocus, macro mode, 20x digital zoom, lens cover, LED flash, red-eye reduction, white balance, exposure compensation, colour tone, light sensitivity, scenes, self-timer.

The image quality is fine for a camera phone. The LED isn't the brightest, so low-light photos aren't as good.

Video capture: Adequate. 352x288 (CIF) at 15 fps.

Symbian OS

All the usual Smartphone features - document viewers, PIM (personal information management tools). Download applications too. Interface is fine.

Music Player

AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, MP3, WMA, WAV, 3GP, 3GPP, MPEG, MP4, M4A, DCF, and M3U support. Shuffle, repeat, equalizer, playlists and many other typical music player options. Use the provided headset to listen to those tunes. Sounds fine.

Other N73 Features

Push-To-Talk (A-Team style communication), FM Visual Radio (stations can send text and/or images to your phone), video player, flash player, Nokia Web browser (access speeds are fine if using 3G), Bluetooth (no AD2P profile support - so can't use Bluetooth headset to listen to music), infrared, voice commands and application manager.

Summary

The Nokia N73 is a good 3G smartphone. It's a bit old now - (Aug 2006) and doesn't have any of the latest smartphone features - GPS, Wi-Fi, HSDPA, Tv-out.

The 3.2 MP camera is good (could have done with a Xenon flash) and the video and music playing features all perform well.

If you want a latest cutting-edge N-Series smartphone, consider the Nokia N82 or the Nokia N95. Nokia suggest the N82 as an upgrade to the N73 on their Web site.
