O2 Cocoon Review

release date: August 2007
colours:

white

The O2 Cocoon is a quad-band, 3G HSDPA music phone with 2 GB internal memory, microSD card slot, 2 MP camera and MP3 player. It's a clamshell (flip) phone with a unique LED light display on the white shell exterior. The phone comes with a "nest" - a docking station - charge the phone and/or use the O2 Cocoon as an alarm clock.

At launch, the O2 Cocoon was £299. 8 months later (April 2008) and you buy an O2 Cocoon on PAYG for just £59.99. Excellent value.

The O2 Cocoon is manufactured by Pantech Curitel, a South Korean mobile manufacturer - 3rd biggest behind Samsung and LG.

O2 Dome Walk into the O2 Dome (Millennium Dome in North Greenwich, London) and you can get exclusive content. The content is "the wallpaper changes... you get a venue map, hints and tips and latest news from O2 direct".

Design

The Cocoon is white with black sides. The sides are curved, giving it an oval shape (when closed). The Cocoon definitely has a unique look.

Hidden LED Light Display: Blue LED lights appear on the front white casing when the flip is closed. It can show: the time, who's calling/texting, track playing, artist and radio station.

5 Icons An icon lights up for missed calls, new emails/messages, alarms set, vibrate only profile activated and battery level. You can customise the scrolling speed.

Nest: Slot the side into the "Nest" and use the phone as an alarm clock. Wake up to song or the radio. Snooze. When the alarm goes off, "GOOD MORNING" or "HELLO" appears on the LED display. The Nest also charges the phone.

Keypad: Flat keys. Easy to press - nice and big.

User Manual: The PDF manual is on the provided CD. You can also download the O2 Cocoon User Guide from O2's mobile guide Web site. The manual is quite good - colour photos, good descriptions. Only a "quick start" guide is provided in the box.

Front: Scrolling LED display. Above the blue LEDs are the LED display icons. At the top is the 2 MP camera and LED flash. Top-right is the volume wheel - you can also operate the volume wheel when the phone is open.

Back: Strap holder, battery cover.

Left: From top: Speaker, connector (hands-free, mini-USB port, charger socket), battery cover release, microSD memory card slot.

Right: Speaker, 4 music player control keys, slide lock key.

2 GB phone memory: 2 GB phone memory - store approx. 500 songs. The microSD card slot supports up to 2 GB cards. Total: 4 GB - pretty good.

Features

2 MP Camera

OK quality 2 MP camera. Like many camera phones, there's a bit of a shutter lag. Flash, 10x digital zoom, auto focus, self-timer and video capture. There's also "funny frames" - add "cheeky borders" to your photos before you take them, landscape/portrait view, white balance, effects, quality, brightness.

Video capture: 320 x 240 maximum resolution, up to 4x zoom. The secondary camera is above the screen.

Music Player

Pretty good music player. Use the dedicated music keys on the right side of the phone. Paolo Nutini, Ash and The Doors songs are pre-installed. You can plug in the "splitter", so 2 people can listen with earphones at once. How sweet.

You can get 15 hours of music playback. Music options include playlists, albums, artists, genres, tracks, album covers, stage sound, gapless play, equalizer, play mode, sleep timer, track rating, shuffle, repeat. Use the provided earphones or play out loud with the loudspeakers.

FM Radio with RDS

Attach the headphones to listen to the radio. Pretty good.

Games

The manual says "Get ready for a gripping gaming experience that takes your
breath away". Games include Tetris (demo), The Sims 2 (demo) and EA Air Hockey.

Web Browser

Basic Web browser. 2.1-inch screen isn't big, but download speeds are good if using 3G or HSDPA (3.5 G).

Summary

The O2 Cocoon is an excellent value 3G HSDPA quad-band music phone with a unique LED display on the front. You can buy an O2 Cocoon for just £59.99 on PAYG (April 2008).
