SUMMARY
Slider phone with 3.2 MP camera and Dynamic Adaptive Control Pad (Dacp). Available SIM-free, the Samsung E950 is low-end mid-range phone.Review
The Samsung E950 is a tri-band EDGE slider phone with 3.2 megapixel camera and "Dynamic Adaptive Control Pad". The touch pad display adapts to the application you are using. For example - it displays camera controls when using the camera, music controls when using the music player.
The E950 touch pad is the same concept and design as the LG KF600 and Samsung U900 Soul mobile phones.
The Samsung E950 appears not to be available on contract or PAYG, only SIM-free (April 2008) at approx. £139. There's not too much publicity around this phone - we missed it, and we're not entirely sure when it was released (it was announced July 2007).
If you want this phone design, but with better features, check out the Samsung U900 Soul.
Design
Black plastic and metallic silver back panel. Decent design.
Left: Volume keys, multi-function jack.
Right: Power key, camera key.
Back: Metallic back cover with loudspeaker. Slide open to reveal the 3.2 MP camera lens, mirror and LED flash.
Front: 2-inch display and touch-pad (Dacp).
Keypad: Big keys, easy to press. For some reason, the middle column of keys is wider than the other two columns.
Features
Touch Pad
The touch pad controls adapt according to the application / menu you are using. Camera controls when using the camera, music player controls when using the music player...
The DaCP control pad set-up is intuitive. Rather than a full touchscreen interface, the manufacturer offers a cheaper alternative - a smaller secondary touch screen. Many people would prefer a big 3.5-inch touchscreen, but then the phone would perhaps cost a lot more money.
3.2 Megapixel Camera
We haven't tested the camera, so can't comment on "quality". There is no autofocus (check this). As with all camera phones, taking photos in good light is recommended.
Web Browsing
NetFront Web browser, EDGE and 2-inch screen. OK for downloading files, if you can easily navigate to the correct URL. This should be obvious, but let's say it - browsing the Web on a 2-inch screen is pitiful. A 3.5-inch screen on an iPhone is better - but it's still pitiful for browsing tasks.
Music Player
Decent music player. Playlists, recently played, most played, artists, genres, visualizations, equalizer. Plug earphones into the port. Bang & Olufsen amplifiers.
Other Features
FM radio with RDS, organiser / PIM tools, video and image editors, image stamp, games, NetFront Web browser, video player, document viewer, SMS, MMS and email.
Summary
The Samsung E950 is a decent tri-band slider phone with 3.2 MP camera, FM radio, music player and touch pad. Pretty good price - £139 (April 2008). If you want better features, look at the Samsung U900 Soul.
