Samsung Omnia Review

release date: August 2008
colours:

black

The Samsung Omnia, aka Samsung i900 (SGH-i900) is Samsung's latest attempt at offering a good iPhone alternative. Samsung means 'everything' in Latin', 'wish' in Arabic and 'testicals' in Spanish.

Key features include:

  • 3.2-inch WGVA (240 x 400) LCD touchscreen (with haptics - vibrates to the touch)
  • Quad-band GSM
  • MicroSD card slot (Samsung state 'up to 16 GB support', but it could support 32 GB cards when they're released in the first half of 2009)
  • GPS
  • TouchWiz interface - uses Widgets - same as the Samsung F480 Tocco
  • Google Maps
  • Wi-Fi
  • 5 MP (2592 x 1944) pixels camera - Power LED (bright), shooting mode, image size, VGA (640 x 480) 15 fps video capture, macro mode, ISO, quality settings, white balance, effects, contrast, image stabilizer, geo-tag pictures, flash, scenes, face and smile detection, auto-panorama shot
  • Multi-Codec Support - Divx, Xvid...
  • Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional OS
  • FM radio with RDS
  • EDGE, 3G and HSDPA (up to 7.2 Mbps)
  • 2 versions - 8 GB or 16 GB phone memory
  • 1440 mAh battery
  • MS Office - Powerpoint, Word, Excel
  • Opera Mobile 9.5 Web browser
  • TV-out
  • Accelerometer - browser, media
  • Video calling camera

Design

Platinum-look finish, 12.5 mm thick and "elegant hairline patterns" on the back.

Quick tour

Front: Send and end buttons, optical mouse.

Right: Volume, camera button, menu button.

Left: Connector, strap holder.

Back: 5 MP camera and power LED flash.

Features

TouchWiz Interface and Widgets

The home screen has 12 icons - call log, phonebook, music player, browser, messages, my files, calendar, camera, Bluetooth, applications, alarms, settings. Widgets Panel on the left. Drag and drop widgets onto the screen, giving you quick access. Widgets include: analogue and digital clock, time zone clock, calendar, gallery, games, birthdays, profiles, radio, music player, events and network information.

Drag an icon onto the screen to use the application.

Opera Mobile 9.5

Pan, zoom, double-tap to zoom in, auto-rotation, text fits the screen when you zoom in. Smooth and quick. No flash support.

5 MP Camera with Power LED

5 MP (2592 x 1944) pixels camera - Power LED (bright), shooting mode, image size, VGA (640 x 480) 15 fps video capture, macro mode, ISO, quality settings, white balance, effects, contrast, image stabilizer, geo-tag pictures, flash, scenes, face and smile detection, auto-panorama shot.

Power LED Flash

Power LEDs are high-power LEDs offering 12x light output as the feeble low-power LEDs, and similar brightness to Xenon flash units used in camera phones. Can be used as part of a dual-LED or triple-LED set-up.

Luxeon Power LED Benefits

  • Power LEDs can be less than 10% of the volume of Xenon flash units
  • Consume less battery power than a Xenon flash
  • Fit easily into slimline mobile phones
  • Cheaper and quicker to manufacture
  • Lower voltage
  • Comparable brightness to Xenon flash units
  • Longer flash duration - hundreds of MS. During that time, the camera can invoke numerous features to better optimise the flash brightness - dynamic white balance, illumination level, auto-focus, red-eye

Speedy

624MHz Marvell PXA312 processor. Quick interface, few lags.

Battery Life

1440 mAh battery. 5 hours 50 mins battery life.

GPS and Google Maps

Built-in GPS. Get your location. Google Maps is installed. Google maps are downloaded in real-time over an Internet connection. To use the maps, you will need an Internet connection and you have to pay data transfer costs to fetch the maps over the mobile network.

You might want to install GPS software (EG: TomTom) - it's cheaper that way.

Summary

Launch price: approx. £539 SIM-free or get it cheap with a pay-monthly contract.

Great phone. Getting one for xmas.

Laura - November 08, 2008
Is the Omnia better than the G1 Google Phone? I've read the G1 software is good but the handset design isn't very good. Is that true?
Andy - November 08, 2008
Software good. Handset is ok. Personal preference. Not as styish as an iPhone. Take a look at the videos (click the menu at the top of this page).
Jlo - November 18, 2008

Much better than the Google Phone.

The Google Phone is like a brick.

John - November 18, 2008

iPhone is better than the T-Mobile G1.

Thanks a LOT Andy =] you really helped me with the batery life and the touchscreen! =] thank you:) and the rating was just what i was looking for. thank you SO much, you really made me think more about which mobile i want, it might be this one still:) thanks again =] bye xxx
Melissa..x - November 06, 2008
Is This Mobile Touchscreen Or Not Because Ithough It Was But I Looked At Some Other Pictures And It Was A Slide Mobile. Will Some One PLEASE Help! thanx a lot guys =] xxx
Andy - November 06, 2008
Yes, it is a touchscreen. "8 hours battery life" - seems about right. The battery will drain quicker if you use GPS, Wi-Fi and the camcorder etc. The battery isn't great compared to lower-spec phones, but compared to similar-featured phones, it's very similar. iPhone has better talk-time. Samsung state 5.8 hours 2G talk-time and 3 hours 3G talk-time. That seems accurate. Can't say any more than that. I find the battery life talk time claims are reasonably accurate - it's about average for a GPS phone. Rating: 8.5/10.

i am thinking about getting this phone. could someone who has this phone tell me what it is like and maybe a mark ou of 10 too please. =]
Melissa - November 06, 2008
i know i wrote this comment, but it is a mark OUT of 10 not a mark ou of ten, lol, whoops :O typing error lol, i am still interested in buying this phone, but i have heard that the battery life is absolutly RUBBISH! is it true? i have read some comments on other websites too and they said the battery life only lasted about 8 hours after it had been on charge all night! :o will someone please tell me the truth, im bored and tired of asking different websites that don't reply :( thanks a lot guys. =] xxx
Razor - September 26, 2008
Samsung's best phone, but I still prefer the iPhone.
Jackie - September 26, 2008
The flash is pretty bright so no Xenon flash isn't a problem.
Sifter - September 22, 2008
Well spotted captain.
Captain FudgePants - September 22, 2008
In the summary you have "OMNIA means 'everything' in Latin and 'wish' in Arabic" and then in the review you write "Samsung means 'everything' in Latin', 'wish' in Arabic", if you had more pants you wouldn't get 'Samsung' and 'Omnia' mixed up.
Sam - September 22, 2008
Got the phone last week and sent it back. Windows was too slow and the camera wasn't very good. Disappointing. I think I'll go for a payg iphone once the price has come down a little.
Melissa...x - November 06, 2008
how much was the phone you sent back, because i am intrested in buying it, will you please tell me all the GOOD stuff about it please. =] xxx
