SUMMARY:
Slider phone with 3.2 MP camera. The touch-sensitive keys are naff. The Samsung G600, G800 and latest slider phones are better.Samsung U600 Review
The Samsung U600 is a stylish slider phone with 3.2 megapixel camera, Quad-band, EDGE, FM radio, video capture, music and video players and more.
Design
The U600 is well-built - it's easy to remove the battery cover and insert the SIM card. The multi-function jack and memory card slots are also easy to open.
U600 Memory: The U600 supports up to a 2 GB microSD memory card. Unfortunately, no memory card is provided in the box. The Samsung U600 has 60 MB of phone memory.
Slider: Good. Slide the front up to answer a call, slide it back down to end a call. You an change slide settings in the 'slide settings' menu.
Keypad: Slide the front up to reveal the keypad. Nice and wide keys. The keypad surface is flat, with each row is separated by a curved silver ridge. The keys press down a little, giving tactile feedback.
Touch-sensitive keys: The soft selection keys, dial key and end call/exit menu keys (on the front of the phone beneath the screen) are all touch-sensitive. You might not like using them.
Occasionally, we unintentionally pressed a touch-sensitive key, thus exiting a menu or making a wrong selection. This also happened a couple of times when playing one of the games - my finger strayed from the navigation keys to the touch-sensitive end call key.
Also, we could press a touch-sensitive key and nothing can happen. Two reasons - 1. We hadn't applied force to the centre of the key or 2. We hadn't fully released (taken pressure off) the key before trying to press the key again.
Speaker quality and volume: OK compared to other mobile phones. Plug the earphones into the multi-function jack to get a better audio quality. The U600 uses a digital power amp by Bang & Olufsen.
Features
3.2 megapixel camera: Good. Slide the front of the Samsung U600 up to reveal camera lens, photo light and mirror at the rear top of the front section.
Options include shooting mode, size (up to 2048 x 1536 pixels), macro mode, flash, timer, effects, frames, white balance, ISO setting (automatic, 100, 200 or 400) and viewfinder mode. Select 'camera shortcuts' to see a graphical layout of the keypad camera shortcuts.
There is auto-focus (press the camera button half-way down to acquire focus) and a 4x digital zoom. The LED flash has a blue tint to it. It's not as good as a Xenon flash.
Autofocus lag time: 1.3 seconds or more. Shutter release lag time: 1.5 seconds. Depending on the subject and light conditions, it can take up to a few seconds to get focus and exposure. The 1.5 second shutter lag refers to the time it takes to take the photo once the camera has autofocus.
Image quality: In good light conditions, the photos come out decent enough. Does the U600 have an image stabilizer? There's no mention of it on the Samsung Web site or in the tiny instruction manual - so we guess not.
Video capture: The camcorder is OK. Record up to 352 x 288 pixel resolution video (15 frames per second).
Music player: OK. View last played, recently played, most played, view by category, playlists, shuffle, repeat mode, equaliser, music player override and 3D sound.
Instruction manual: Very small and not very informative.
Battery life: Samsung state 4 hours talk time.
FM Radio: OK. Attach the earphones (which houses the antenna) to listen to the FM radio.
Web browsing: The U600 comes with NetFront 3.2 browser. Text entry is slow due to predictive text not working for URL input, and of course there's no QWERTY keyboard. Web browsing is a slow experience.
The Samsung U600 does not have 3G, only EDGE. Downloading Web pages is not very fast.
Smart search: Search your U600 for any stored information by category. Select a category, and type keywords into the search box.
Making phone calls: The screen displays nice big numbers when making a call. Call quality is fine. Could do with being a little louder however.
Texting: The Samsung U600 has T9 predictive text - texting can be quite quick.
Voice functions: There's a voice memo recorder, but no voice dialling.
Samsung U600 vs Samsung G600: Which is better? The U600 or the Samsung G600?
The Samsung G600 has a 5 MP camera (very little difference in image quality), a 16 million colour screen, VGA video capture, and has no touch-sensitive keys.
The Samsung G600 also has NetFront 3.4 - a better Web browser and a 1 GB microSD memory card and WEP210 bluetooth headset are included in the package. The Samsung G600 is the newer and better phone. You can get the G600 for free on contract from one of the mobile shops listed below on this page.
Summary
Good phone with decent features but you might not like the touch-sensitive keys. There's no memory card included in the box and Web browsing isn't great. Consider the newer Samsung G600 mobile phone.
