The Samsung U800 (aka U800 Soul b) is the 3rd phone in the Soul Series. Previous models include the Samsung U900 Soul Slider and Samsung G400 (clamshell phone).

The U800 looks remarkably like the Nokia 6500 Classic - another brushed stainless steel slimline beauty.

Currently (August 2008), you can buy the Samsung U800 in Soul Pink (at Phones4U) or Platinum Silver on SIM-free or pay-monthly contract. The press release says other colours are available, although we don't know if or when they will be released in the UK market. SIM free price, August 2008 - £220 - a high mid-range price.

Colours include: Platinum Silver, Soul grey, Metallic black, Soul Pink, Amethyst Violet.

Design

Pretty phone. Kissy kissy.

Brushed stainless steel exterior. Classy. Good build quality. Thin too. 9 mm. Slip it into those tight jean pockets. Top marks for style. Joint 3rd in our database of thinnest mobile phones, after the W880i (9.4 mm) and Nokia 6500 Classic (9.5 mm).

Quick tour:

Front: Camera, earpiece, 2-inch QVGA 16 million colour TFT screen, D-pad, navigation keys and the keypad. Keypad is good. Ridges separate the rows. Nice big keys.

Left: Volume rocker, microSD slot (supports up to 8 GB).

Right: Camera key, USB port.

Bottom: Lanyard eyelet.

User Created Skins (UCS)

Choose themes and colours, customise the GUI. 3 preset themes. Cute.

Music Player

Standard stuff - playlists, artists, genres, most played, recently played. Does the job. Supports MP3, AMR, AAC, AAC+, e-AAC+, WMA. 1 GB phone memory will let you store 250 4 MB tracks. Expand the memory with a microSD slot.

Battery Life

Samsung quote 6 hours talk time, 3.5 hours 3G. A little above average. 880 mAh battery.

3.2 MP Camera

Power LED flash (12x brighter than a standard LED), 4x zoom, QCIF video capture at 15 fps (naff), no auto-focus (so getting close up shots and other shots in focus can be tricky). GSMArena have gone to the effort of taking photos and transferring them to the PC. They say photos are good for a 3.2 MP camera.

Other Features

Document viewer, FM radio with RDS, HTML browser, 3G and HSDPA (fast Internet access, shame about the small 2-inch screen - funnily, Samsung say it's a big 2-inch screen), document viewer, video call camera. Video player (MPEG4/H.263/H.264)

Summary

Looks good. Brushed metal finish. Adequate camera. Functional music player. Thin and good build quality. The U800 looks like the Nokia 6500 Classic. Being an older phone, the Nokia 6500 is a lot cheaper now, available for £130 on PAYG.
