SUMMARY:

Basic 3G phone. A little old (July 2006), but still worth a look if you're after a low-cost 3G phone. The 2 MP camera isn't very good.

Sony Ericsson K610i Review

release date: July 2006
colours:

evening red

urban silver

misty white

The Sony Ericsson K610i is a compact stylish 3G candybar phone. Sort of a 3G version of the Sony Ericsson K750i, but with a not-so-good camera and no FM radio. Available in 3 lovely colours - Evening Red, Urban Silver and Misty White.

Design

The Sony Ericsson K610i is lightweight (89 g) and slim (45 mm). The phone is made of plastic. The phone feels solid.

Screen: The 1.9-inch plastic-covered screen isn't very large - 1.9-inches with 176 x 220 resolution. Most mid-range new mobile phones have at least 240 x 320 resolution.

Keypad and navigation keys: Good. Keys are tightly packed, but are easy enough to press. The navigation keys above the keypad are also big enough and easy to press. The 4-way navigation key works fine.

Memory card slot The Memory Stick Micro (M2) slot is located beneath the cover (bottom left). 'M2' is written on the left side of the K610i. A 64 MB card is included in the box. The card is hot-swappable - no need to remove the battery to change memory cards. The K610i has just 16 MB phone memory.

Features

2 MP camera

There's no auto-focus, no LED flash, no macro mode and no camera lens cover. There is a self-portrait mirror on the back. The images tend to come out a little dull - even in bright-light settings.

Options include zoom, brightness, shoot mode, picture size, self-timer, effects, white balance, picture quality and shutter sound. There's a camera button on the right side of the K610i. Photos are taken in landscape view.

Video capture isn't great - just 176 x 144 resolution at 15 frames per second (fps). Quality is similarly lacking. If you want better camera quality, look at the camera phones with 3.2 MP or more - these tend to be equipped with better optics and camera software.

3G video calling: There is a front-facing video camera. Both you and the person on the other end, will need to be in 3G network coverage areas. Video call pricing varies - check your mobile network's call charges.

No FM Radio

No FM radio is a strange decision. Earphones were not included in the box when the K610i first launched. They should be included now - it could vary between networks.

Text input

T9 predictive text. ABC text input. QWERTY keyboards are far quicker - we can achieve 30 words-per-minute (wpm) with a QWERTY. ABC with T9 predictive - we're lucky to hit 10 wpm.

Web browsing

Not much to say except: 1.9-inch screen, 176 x 220 pixels. The K610i is 3G, so you can get fast Internet downloads.

Music player

Basic stuff. Artists, tracks, playlists, videos, sort, play mode, shuffle, equalizer and stereo widening. A 64 MB M2 memory card doesn't offer lots of storage space.

Summary

The Sony Ericsson is a decent-enough 3G mobile phone with a reasonable number of features. Battery life is good. Sony Ericsson claim 7 hours talk time on a 2G network, 2.5 hours on a 3G network.

Small and lightweight, the K610i is worth a look. Look elsewhere if you intend to browse the Internet regularly and/or take lots of photos. If you want a basic 3G phone, take a look at the 3 Skypephone deals - a great value cheap 3G phone.

As with most 3G mobiles, you can buy the K610i SIM-free, on PAYG, or get buy the Sony K610i on a mobile contract - and get the phone for "free".

I have had one for about a year now, really unimpressed... 64 MB memory doesn't cut it these days, speaker quality is appalling, no radio is stupid, screen is to small, camera quality is woeful at best, plastic exterior is getting VERY scratched even with minimal use and good care, battery life is not great, looks ugly too (IMO).

Yeah, I wouldn't buy one of these now.
