SUMMARY:
Stylish touchscreen 3G smartphone with Symbian OS. Fast 3G Internet access, quick text entry, email, push-email and PIM software. No camera.Sony Ericsson M600i Review
The Sony Ericsson M600i is a stylish touchscreen 3G smartphone with Symbian OS. It's targeted at business users - fast 3G Internet access, quick text entry, email, push-email and personal information management (PIM) software. There's no camera on the M600i.
Overall, the M600i is a very good mobile phone. It's missing Wi-Fi and HSDPA support (3.5G - offers faster Internet access) and it's slow to start up (takes 60 seconds).
Design
Text input: There are 3 text input options:
1. QWERTY keyboard
2. Virtual keyboard
3. Handwriting recognition
The virtual keyboard keys are a tad small but we found it fine for text input. You'll need to use the stylus to use the virtual keyboard or handwriting input methods.
The handwriting recognition software is good, but errors can easily be made. With practice you might well prefer this text input method.
There's an arrow on the right side of the screen. Write numbers and symbols above the arrow, upper case letters in line with arrow and lower case letters below the arrow. We also found that the strokes sometimes didn't register and we had to rewrite the character.
You can operate the hardware QWERTY keyboard with one hand. Each key has 2 letters - push towards the left or right side of the key to select the appropriate letter.
Predictive text can speed up your text input. Type in a letter and you're given word suggestions. Select a word from a horizontal list. New suggestions appear after each letter input.
Features
Web Browsing: Good. The 240 x 320 pixel screen lets you view a decent amount of the screen. You can view about 12 lines of text on the screen.
GPRS is slow. It can take a while for pages to download. Use the 3G connection for faster Web page download speeds.
The Opera 8 mobile Web browser is used. Opera 8 mobile browser supports Javascript, switching to portrait or landscape views (very useful for tiny screens) and secure connections (https://). Other useful features include a password manager, bookmarks and a download manager.
Games: Playing games on the M600i is great. Nice big 2.6-inch 262K colour screen. The Vijay Singh golf game is good - nice graphics and gameplay. Quadrapop is a tetris-like game.
QuickOffice and PDF+: Found in the 'office' folder, you can view and edit Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and text documents. With PDF+, yes, you can view PDF files. All these applications work fine.
Summary
The Sony Ericsson M600i is a good stylish smartphone for business users. Fast 3G Internet access, large 2.6-inch touchscreen and Symbian OS make this phone a decent package.
