SUMMARY

Budget EDGE tri-band Walkman music phone. The W350i is Sony Ericsson's first flip phone. Very light (75g) and thin (11 mm). Available in 4 trendy colours.

Review

Sony Ericsson's first flip phone. The W350i is an entry level / budget Sony Walkman Phone with Music Player 2.0 software (not the latest 3.0 version). Music controls on the front, flip up beneath the screen to reveal the keypad.

Being a cheap phone, the W350i lacks plenty of features - no 3.5 mm audio jack, no 3G and a small 1.9-inch 240x320 pixel screen. Tri-band only and although it does have an M2 memory card slot, it only supports a paltry 2 GB. We'll let them off. The phone only costs £80 on PAYG (August 2008) or £120 SIM free.

Design

Pick the W350i up, and you'll notice how light it is. Just 75 g. The 3rd lightest phone we've listed so far at MobileSift. It's thin too - 11 mm, so will slip easily into those pockets.

Quick tour:

Top: Music key lock.

Front: 1.9-inch screen, 176 x 200 pixels TFT screen. Keypad and navigation controls - flip open the front flip. The flip is flimsy plastic. Walkman Player keys adorn the front of the flip - rewind, fast forward, play/pause/stop music key.

The keypad keys are big and easy to press.

Left: Walkman Player Control, connector for charger.

Back: 1.3 MP camera on the back (top) - no flash or mirror and loudspeaker at the bottom. Battery cover is easy to remove.

Features

Walkman Player 2.0

Artists, albums, tracks, playlists. Use the music player controls. There's no 3.5 mm audio jack, so use an adapter. Loudspeaker is decent, as are the provided earphones. There's PlayNow (download ringtones, games, music, themes and wallpaper from the Web) and the TrackID service - the music recognition service.

There's a a feeble 14 MB phone memory. A 512 MB card comes inside the box. Sony say the W350i will support up to a 2 GB memory card - that's enough for approx. 480 songs.

Tri-band Only

You won't be able to use the W350i in many parts of South, Central and North America. Darn.

1.3 MP Camera

Low megapixel camera with no flash or video recording. 4x digital zoom. Basic settings. Image quality isn't great as you'd expect.

Other Features

FM radio, video player, EDGE, Bluetooth (you can stream music to a Bluetooth headset), NetFront Web browser (small screen/resolution and EDGE only, so naff Web browsing experience), RSS reader and PIM tools.

Summary

The W350i is a good budget music phone, but is rather lightweight when it comes to other features. Something like a Nokia 5610 XpressMusic could be more tempting. Alternatively, check out MobileSift's fabulous database of the latest Music Phones.
