SUMMARY:

The W660i is a good little 3G music phone. Reasonably priced, decent memory capabilities (up to 2 GB) and all those other little features to keep you entertained - radio, camera, music player, video playback and organizer tools.

Sony Ericsson W660i Review

release date: April 2007
colours:

record black

rose red

The Sony Ericsson W660i is a mid-range 3G Walkman phone. Overall, the W660i is a decent mid-range 3G music phone. Not so good features include the small 176 x 220 screen resolution and the 2 MP camera - which lacks features (flash, autofocus, macro mode).

Design

The W660i has the same dimensions as the Sony Ericsson K530i. The W660i is plastic and has gold trim. It's available in 2 colours - Rose Red or Record Black. The top half of the back is patterned - a girly flowery pattern on the Rose Red, or record rings on the black version.

Keypad: Easy to press and big enough. The navigation keys above the keypad are also big and easy to press. The 3 circles are flush with the top of the keypad. Why? So Sony Ericsson can fit in the 'Walkman' logo. Yep, usability makes way for branding.

We didn't have a problem with the this (big chunky-fingered folk might), but using the top row of keys did feel a little cramped.

W660i Keypad

M2 memory card slot: Supports up to 2 GB M2 Memory Stick Micro cards. The sales package includes a 512 MB card. M2 cards are a little more expensive than other memory card formats. Boo, hiss....

Features

Music Player

Walkman Player 2.0. View album covers, titles, browse by artists, tracks, playlists, visualization, play mode, skins, stereo widening, equalizer, loop and shuffle.

The headset is good. Much better than the tinny W660i speaker. The headset has a 3.5 mm adapter option - plug in your own headset if you wish. There's also TrackID (the music recognition service) and PlayNow (buy music online).

Web browser

The W660i uses the NetFront Web browser. 3G is a bonus, but the 176 x 220 pixel 2-inch screen is not great for viewing Web sites.

2 MP camera

Image quality is OK, providing you take the photos in good light and have focus. There's no photo light, autofocus, mirror or macro mode. Video capture is 176 x 144 - the same as most other Sony Ericsson phones.

The W660i's camera options match other mid-range Sony Ericsson phone - white balance, image quality, metering mode, scenes, shoot mode, picture size...

Other fun features

FM radio, video player, Bluetooth (A2DP included), VideoDJ, MusicDJ, PhotoDJ, picture blogging, organizer tools (calendar, calculator and more), 3G video calling (VGA camera on the front). Games include: 3D Extreme Air Snowboarding and Tower Bloxx.

Summary

The W660i is a good little music playing 3G phone. Reasonably priced, decent memory capabilities (up to 2 GB) and all those other little features to keep you entertained - radio, camera, music player, video playback and organizer tools.
