Sony Ericsson W850i Review

The Sony Ericsson W850i is a good little music phone. It's small, a little chunky (thickness) but we like its design - the patterned effect on the back looks good. The W850i has a decent slide mechanism - it springs open / closed once you hit the halfway position. Sliding the W850i open with your thumb to reveal the keypad is a cinch.

Design

The keypad has nice large keys - well spaced apart and a decent size. The orange strip you see in the photo above is the "Walkman key" - hit it to access the decent music player. Switching to music player mode, the orange key glows a groovy orange colour, as does the navigation key and backlighting on the other front keys.

Navigating menus is fine with the navigation key - The central navigation key is concaved/recessed. Up/down/left/right keys are flat - press down to click your option. The navigation keys might not be to your liking - they take a little bit more force to use than we would have liked.

Features

The 2 megapixel camera picture quality is OK - not great, providing you get focus. There is no camera autofocus and there's no camera lens cover - although the lens itself is recessed (not flush with the back), so you won't get "fingerprints on lens / glass" problems as you do with some other mobile phones. There's no flash - just a photo light. There's a small mirror next to the photo light for all those self photos you might want to take.

The W850i has 3G connectivity with video calling capabilities - the VGA camera is at the front top of the phone within the speakerphone.

The music player is good - play modes, equalizer, visualisations, light effects (the orange light Walkman key flickers to the music beats). The W850i comes with a 1 GB memory card, so you can store a decent number of songs on it. The loudspeaker at full volume is ... LOUD. For best music listening experience, use a pair of quality headphones.

Making and receiving calls was fine. You can't end a call by sliding the front of the phone down - a slight minus point.
