SUMMARY:

A very thin and stylish 3G music phone. Lots of features - music player, video player and camera. You might find the keys too close together and fiddly to use.

Sony Ericsson W880i Review

release date: March 2007
colours:

steel silver

flame black

The Sony Ericsson W880i is a very slim, thin and lightweight stylish 3G music phone. It has lots of features - similar to other Walkman phones, but the small tightly-packed keys could be an issue for many people.

Design

Keypad: The big problem area for the phone. The keys are thin and they're close together. A lot of people will not like using this keypad.

The key question you have to ask yourself is "Will I like the keypad?". We found that typing quickly was a problem and that we had to constantly check we were pressing the correct key.

We would not buy this phone without first checking out the keypad in a high street shop.

Navigation Keys: The navigation and selection keys above the keypad are a bit fiddly to use too. A little small and little too close together for our liking.

The navigation keys include - on the left: a select key, open browser key and the 'go back' key. On the right: a select key, activity menu key and 'c' cancel key.

Press and hold the 'c key to turn the W880i phone on or off, delete items, or mute the microphone during a call.

The Screen: Good quality 262k colour 240 x 320 pixel screen. The screen is small - particularly narrow.

Battery and Back Cover:
There is a little groove on each side of the phone - remove the back cover by lifting at the grooves. The battery was difficult to remove.

The manual states 'insert your thumbnail into the groove to remove the battery'. We had to use a screwdriver - we haven't got long girly nails. The battery is very tightly packed - even with long nails we think it would be difficult to remove the battery.

Start-up time: Quick.

Web browsing: The W880i is 3G, so Internet download speeds are OK. The small screen however means navigating the Web is not great.

Features

Camera: The camera is OK. There's night mode, shoot mode, exposure control, picture size, self-timer, effects, white balance, shutter sound, picture quality and time and date options. The W880i has no autofocus or flash.

Navigation Keys: A little small and close together.

Music Player: Good. Decent volume (loud), shuffle, loop, playlist, equalizer, visualizations (in a little box), skins, play mode, view music by artists, albums, tracks, playlists or online channels. The 1 GB memory enables you store a good number of tracks.

Loudspeaker: Good. Maximum volume is LOUD.

Summary

A very thin and stylish 3G music phone. Lots of features - music player, video player and camera - but we found the keys were too close together and fiddly to use.

If you find the keypad OK to use and you don't mind phones with small screens, then the W880i is a very good phone.

Yes, good music phone. Regarding the turn off problem: From what I've read, it looks like it could have something to do with the gold contacts on the battery and phone. If it happens, clean the gold contacts on the battery/phone with a dry cloth. It can happen with any phone.

i am getting this phone for christmas and i probs wont be that bothered about the keys i will only use them for texting me mates and that so my point of view, is that the fone is mint and i dunno why use are saying the keys might be a bit hard to use, cos there not my mate has got this fone in silver and hers is easy, so iif hers is easy i think that you are telling lies and blagging peoples head, so just to let ya no everyone the fone is mint and the keys are not tricky to use so, whoever made this page are freaks, and need to get there heads sorted out!

Keys are too thin for people with big fingers, probly ok for girls with little fingers.
